Purpose of use |
Illustration of articles used by characters. This photo provides an opportunity to see the characters' masks close up. Outside of this, one only gets glimpses of them on Kovacs videos where the characters were performing. Previously they had been seen primarily in black and white since Kovacs died in 1962, and had been seen as part of a brief sketch. Every Kovacs program did not feature the Nairobi Trio, and the characters were never performed unless they were wearing their masks and costumes. The masks made it possible for stars like Jack Lemmon and Frank Sinatra, both friends of Kovacs, to don the gear and take the part of the third gorilla with the mallets who would use them to drum on Kovacs' head. The masks and costumes became the property of Kovacs' wife, Edie Adams, after his death. Adams kept them until hers; her estate offered them for sale at auction and it was the first time one could really get a good look at them. |
